authors, discusses The Bookshop of Forbidden Books with Georgia de Chamberet. It’s set in a near-future France where thousands of books are banned, and an independent bookseller spends five years in prison for hosting secret readings in his cellar. Part romance, part political satire, part cosy crime, it is a warning about censorship on both sides of the Atlantic.
Marc talks about how he started writing: a story for his young son that went on to sell millions. He explains why resisting tyranny in all its forms matters to him, and why booksellers, librarians and authors are the first line of defence. He also recommends books for listeners, especially his novel Symphony of Monsters, based on Russia’s abduction of Ukrainian children and Putin’s campaign to remodel their identity; he wrote it so that nobody could say ‘we didn’t know’.
